How much can a high-quality drone cost and is it possible to save money in this case?

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what makes up the cost of a drone and what consequences cheap solutions can have on the battlefield.

In today’s warfare environment, technology plays a critical role in providing an advantage on the battlefield. Drones have become one of the most important tools for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, allowing them to perform reconnaissance and combat missions with minimal risk to personnel. However, the choice between cheap and high-quality drones remains a difficult one. Is it worth saving money on components, risking the lives of the military, or investing in reliability and efficiency?

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what makes up the cost of a drone and what consequences cheap solutions can have on the battlefield.

So, let’s take a look.

What does a drone consist of and how much does it cost?

  1. Battery
  2. Motors
  3. Video transmitter
  4. Frame
  5. Control antenna
  6. Video transmitter antenna
  7. Camera
  8. Flight stack (controller)
  9. Quality of assembly and soldering
  10. Quality control – testing of each drone
  11. Packaging
  12. Firmware quality
  13. Service and support
  14. Communication protocols
  15. Other parts of the ecosystem – base stations, airborne repeaters, etc.

This is not to mention investments in technology, in new developments, in equipment that must ensure the quality of the drone, and other improvements that need to be implemented on an ongoing basis.

Let’s take a closer look at each parameter to understand what you can really save on and what consequences saving on important elements can have.

1. Battery

When you see a cheap battery, you immediately have to ask yourself the question, at what expense?
Some manufacturers use second-hand batteries and batteries that have already been sent for recycling in other countries. They choose fakes because they are cheaper. Cheap batteries can have a wide variation in cell parameters, which affects the overall capacity of the assembly and its quality. All of this can lead to the inability to carry out a combat flight for the distance stated by the manufacturer.

Also, cheap batteries often have poor battery assembly:

  • poor quality soldering instead of welding,
  • violation of the battery assembly process (unreliable and loose assembly of battery cells)

And this can already lead to the drone falling next to the operator or on its own position

And so, we are recording it:

Saving on batteries can lead to:

  1. inability to carry out a combat flight at the distance declared by the manufacturer, as a result of failure to fulfill the combat mission
  2. the drone crashes near the operator or on its own position

So, what are you “overpaying” for when you choose a high-quality battery?

In expensive batteries:

  • use new batteries from quality manufacturers Samsung, Molicel, Westing House, etc.
  • carefully control the selection of elements with a thin set of criteria, such as internal resistance
  • make welded connections of elements instead of soldering
  • securely fasten the cells inside the battery, pack the entire battery in lavsan and shrink film.
  • testing the battery for discharge/charge before delivery
  • high-quality and high-tech equipment is used for assembly, which affects the final cost of the product

How much a battery can cost on the market:

That is, you need to “pay extra” for a better battery that ensures greater reliability and safety of the operator 700 – 2200 UAH. On average, it is +1450 UAH

2. Motors

Now let’s look at the motors.

Cheap drones use no-name motors from no-name manufacturers. Such drones usually have a high reject rate and low reliability, which can lead to the drone falling on its own position or near the operator.

Also, such motors have low power (energy efficiency), which affects the load capacity of the product. And it is very common for a drone to not meet the characteristics declared by the manufacturer. Therefore, when the military receives a drone with such motors, they cannot be sure that it will carry the weight over a given distance – this can be a failed mission and reveal their positions instead of a successful mission.

So we are recording the consequences of using cheap motors in the drone:

  1. falling of the drone to its own position or near the operator
  2. failure of the mission, disclosure of their positions, failure to fulfill the combat mission due to the inconsistency of the declared characteristics of the drone

Now let’s take a look at what manufacturers who use more expensive motors in their drones pay for:

  • well-known quality manufacturer Brother hobby, Foxeer, which means predictable and understandable quality
  • a large margin of power (energy efficiency) of the motors, which affects the load capacity of the product and the reliable operation of the drone
  • high fault tolerance and reliability
  • real compliance with the characteristics declared by the manufacturer
  • selection of motors with maximum energy efficiency in terms of G/W

How much can motors cost on the market?

Thus, for higher quality motors that provide better load capacity, greater reliability and operator safety, you need to “pay extra” 400 – 1800 UAH. On average, it is +1100 UAH

3. Video transmitter

The next item we’re going to look at is the video transmitter.

No name manufacturer, which means no predictable quality. Low maximum power of the video transmitter, which affects the flight range. Low reliability of the video transmitter. Heating and, consequently, power loss during operation can lead to the inability to carry out a combat flight at the distance declared by the manufacturer.

Also, cheap video transmitters have a limited set of functionality, for example, the ability to adjust power within a limited range of values is a risk to the lives of pilots due to the possibility of detecting the position of operators.

Let’s record the consequences of using a cheap video transmitter:

  1. impossibility to carry out a combat flight at the distance declared by the manufacturer, which means the failure of the mission
  2. risk to the lives of pilots due to the possibility of detecting the position of operators

Meanwhile, a more expensive video transmitter is:

  • The use of components from well-known manufacturers (Foxeer, Rush max), which means clear and predictable quality
  • The use of expensive transmitters of maximum power (2.5, 3 and 5 W) with the ability to reduce power to the minimum
  • High reliability and ability to maintain the declared parameters throughout the flight period
  • A wide range of functionalities, such as the ability to adjust the power with a minimum step and minimum values, which makes it difficult to detect pilot calculations and contributes to their safety

The difference in cost is not very large, but it is very large when using a drone. On average, it is +80 UAH

4. Frame

It would seem that you can definitely save money on the frame, right? Let’s look into it.

Cheap drones have poor quality frame elements, poor assembly, which affects its rigidity and, consequently, the flight characteristics of the device, and this leads to poor drone control, which will reduce the likelihood of hitting the target.

The military also often complains that cheap drones have limited frame functionality, such as design flaws in terms of equipment placement – battery, battery pack. That is, the military has to spend additional effort and time to securely attach a combat unit or battery.

We record the effects of saving on the frame:

  1. Poor drone control, which will reduce the probability of hitting the target
  2. More time spent on attaching the warhead

More expensive drones are more likely to produce and use frames of their own design, which take into account all the features of the tasks assigned to the device. This requires a staff of design engineers, which of course increases the cost of the product. Also, the frames need to be constantly modified and improved, which again means additional costs for design engineers.

Again, the difference in money is not very big, but the frame of the in-house production saves the military time for attaching the battery and the battery pack, and also gives the drone more controllability, which increases the probability of hitting the target. On average, it is +130 UAH

5. Control antenna

Cheap drones often use standard antennas for non-standard frequencies, which reduces the efficiency of communication between the transmitter and receiver.

High-quality drones use an antenna emitter of an original design, which increases the sensitivity of reception and, accordingly, the quality of device control in conditions of radio jamming.

The production of such antennas requires special equipment and a communications engineer.

6. Video transmitter antenna

Cheap drones use standard frequencies from the manufacturer, which can be easily jammed by electronic warfare. This can lead to the impossibility of performing a combat mission and the inability to carry out a combat flight at the distance declared by the manufacturer.

High-quality drones use branded antennas that provide high sensitivity and reliability of communication.

7. Camera

Let’s move on to the camera.

Cheap drones often use no-name cameras. They often have poor image quality, a smaller viewing angle, and it’s hard to see objects at dusk. Imagine if you have to fly under electronic warfare with such a camera, and the probability of hitting an enemy target is greatly reduced.

Higher-quality drones have cameras from well-known manufacturers (Foxeer, Caddx), a clear picture, decent image quality, a wider viewing angle, night sensitive cameras that allow you to maintain image quality and visibility of objects in low light (moon, dusk)

8. Flight stack (controller)

The next candidate for discussion is the flight controller.

What’s in cheap drones:

  • No name manufacturer, which means unknown quality and reliability, frequent defects – this can lead to the impossibility of a combat mission, as well as to the drone falling to its own position
  • Incorrect load distribution between the engines – this burns the battery faster, which means a reduced flight range, which can lead to failure the combat mission, or to an increased threat to the operator’s life, as he will have to approach the enemy at a closer distance
  • There is a delay in control, commands from the remote control are executed with a delay, maneuverability is reduced, there is a chance of not hitting the target, not fulfilling the combat mission, and revealing your positions to the enemy

Higher-quality drones use flight controllers from well-known manufacturers such as SpeedyBee, Diatone, and others, with clear quality and reliability, and minimal reject rates. High controllability, quick response to any commands from the remote control. Correct load distribution between the motors, longer battery life, which means an increased flight range.

9. Quality of assembly and soldering

A cheap drone is assembled at home by low-skilled personnel without proper experience and qualifications, which does not ensure high quality and reliability of the drone. This can lead to some elements coming off in flight, and the drone can fall next to the operator or on its own position.

And vice versa for a more expensive drone:

  • assembly and soldering are subject to multi-level quality control
  • testing at each stage of assembly
  • the assembly is carried out taking into account high fault tolerance and ease of use, which ensures maximum operational safety
  • soldered joints undergo additional visual inspection
  • the housing after assembly is tested for rigidity and reliability of the connection, which ensures high controllability of the product

10. Quality control – testing of each drone

A cheap drone is not tested and flown before it is sold, so any mistake in the preliminary stages of production can lead to any of the consequences mentioned above. Also, sometimes the military, who have reached their positions, find out that there is a problem only during takeoff, which can mean a disruption of the combat mission and unnecessary time spent overcoming obstacles before takeoff.

Conversely, a more expensive drone undergoes quality control in accordance with the test protocol. Each copter undergoes flight tests with the rejection of products of inadequate quality. Sometimes drones fall and crash during overflights due to a lack of components, which is also an additional cost. But in this case, the military receives a working drone and does not have to test it before the mission – just take it and fly it.

11. Packaging

A cheap drone may not be packed in any way, or it may be packed in an individual box, but it is not fixed in any way, or several drones may be packed in one box. In this case, the integrity of the product or components may be compromised during transportation.

A better quality drone comes in an individual cardboard box, which prevents damage to the product during transportation. The drone and the battery are securely fastened with ties or the box structure itself. The package should include instructions and a test report, as well as manufacturer and support contacts.

12. Firmware quality

A cheap drone uses standard firmware that does not take into account all the features of the product configuration and does not allow it to be used with maximum efficiency. This can lead to poor drone controllability, which will reduce the likelihood of hitting the target. Sometimes cheap drones are delivered without firmware at all, and the military needs to spend additional time on firmware.

For more expensive drones, the manufacturer supplies firmware that takes into account all the configuration features and allows the drone to be used as efficiently as possible. The firmware is adapted to the specific tasks in which the product is used

13. Service and support

Cheap drones are often delivered to the frontline in a single pile, without manufacturer contacts, without technical support contacts. The military cannot get advice and are left to deal with the problems that arise. Due to the lack of manufacturer’s contacts, it is also impossible to give feedback on the products and report on the need for changes. This can lead to the inability to carry out a combat mission due to problems with the setup.

More expensive drones have 24/7 service and technical support, repair and replacement of faulty products, modernization and adaptation of the product to specific customer tasks. All of this allows us to be in constant contact with the military, improve our own products and provide the right products to the front line.

14. Communication protocols

Lower-cost drones use standard communication protocols. Standard protocols can be intercepted or suppressed by EW, which can lead to the loss of the drone and the failure of the combat mission.

A more expensive drone uses non-standard frequencies along with standard communication protocols, with the technology of PFRT (pseudo-random frequency hopping), which makes the drone resistant to EW and control interception. However, such developments require qualified specialized personnel, such as programmers, communications engineers, etc.

15. Other parts of the ecosystem – base stations, airborne repeaters, etc.

Cheaper drones often don’t have comprehensive solutions, which can lead to time wasted when setting up devices from different manufacturers.

For more expensive and high-quality drones, the manufacturer offers a range of additional equipment (base stations, airborne repeaters, etc.) that will be guaranteed to communicate with the supplied product in accordance with the frequencies and standards of communication protocols, but all these developments also require additional separate personnel and costs.

Conclusions

If you put it all together, you can see that a cheap drone can be bought for about 12100 UAH, and a high-quality one for 20400 UAH.

* based on 2000 drones

The difference in 8300 UAH This is almost double. The decision to buy cheap drones may seem attractive from a financial point of view, but the risks associated with their use can have fatal consequences for military operations and personnel safety.

Let’s take a look at the consequences of using low-quality components in the production of a drone:

  1. Impossibility to carry out a combat mission due to damage
  2. Can fall near the operator or on their own positions – this can have fatal consequences for the loss of their own personnel
  3. Non-compliance with the declared characteristics of weight transfer over a given distance is a failed combat mission
  4. The inability to carry out a combat flight at the distance declared by the manufacturer means that personnel must approach the enemy to perform a combat mission, increasing the risks
  5. Risk to the lives of pilots due to the possibility of detecting the position of operators
  6. Poor controllability of the drone, which will reduce the probability of hitting the target
  7. Loss of time when attaching a warhead or battery
  8. Loss of the drone

Good reasons to buy a more expensive drone, don’t you agree?

It should also be added that manufacturers of cheap drones do not invest in their development, do not improve products and technologies, and the frontline, as well as technologies, are constantly changing. They also don’t invest in staff, don’t try to provide a comprehensive solution, and their goal is to sell the maximum number of products. Moreover, note that there are no drones for 12,000 on the market. That is, a manufacturer of cheap drones, reducing the cost by using cheap components, increases the risks for the military, but also increases its profits by adding more percentage points to profitability.

On the contrary, manufacturers of higher-quality drones are constantly improving drones and technologies, hiring qualified personnel, conducting research, communicating with the military, gathering their needs, and trying to solve all military requests in a comprehensive manner, while not skimping on components and investing part of their profitability in the development of the industry and technologies.

Let’s summarize the results.

As we’ve seen, skimping on drones can lead to serious problems on the battlefield, from the inability to complete combat missions to risking the lives of operators. While high-quality drones are more expensive, they guarantee reliability, efficiency, and safety.

In a war where every detail matters, investing in quality drones is an investment in the safety of our military, the development of unmanned technologies and our Victory!

The choice is yours!
